Eating disorders affect many people and the media’s influences regarding the subject increase the statistics. A majority of the world is surrounded and influenced by mass media on a daily basis. Whether it be from radio waves, to television sets, to words in print to the internet. The media distorts our perceptions of our own body image. It allows us to see outside into the world, but doesn’t always show us what is truly real. The media shows us images of men and women that have been “retouched” to make them look flawless. This type of media illuminates physical perfection that is unattainable in real life. The media is there to inform, to educate and to entertain, but many children are not aware that what is projected by the media can sometimes not be as it seems. The wrong messages are being conveyed by the media about body image, and our children are watching.
